2 Months Old

This week Violet is 2 months old. We're looking forward to her 2 month doctor's appointment on Wednesday so we can talk to the doctor about all that she has learned and what we can expect over the next month. Unfortunately I also know that she will get a series of shots at this appointment; not fun for mom, dad or baby.

The bad news:
Over this past couple of weeks Violet has had her first diaper rash, and it was quite bad. We're fighting it by changing diapers obsessively, and spending some naked time each day (Violet, not me) to air it out. Butt paste is great, but A&D seems to be doing the trick, it's finally getting better.

Violet's perfect skin has gone through some changes too. She's breaking out like a teenager and scratching herself with her nails. I noticed today though that her skin is much better, almost happening over night. No matter what I still think she's beautiful.

The good news:
The best news is that she is sleeping through the night pretty consistently. We started putting her to bed as close to 8pm as possible and she'll sleep for at least 6 hours, sometimes 8! She's also getting better at soothing herself to sleep. While it still requires me to wake up in the wee hours, this is considered sleeping through the night so I guess we're lucky.

What we've been up to:
Mornings are her happy times so we spend this time playing on the floor and doing as much tummy time as she will put up with, which is unfortunately not as much as the pediatrician recommends. In spite of that her head control is pretty darn good.

She has a tendency to look to the right. This is something I want to ask the pediatrician about. When she's cranky she strains her head to the right. She also sucks her right thumb.

She likes to be read to and we try to read a book every day. Consignment stores are great places to get books for $.50 or $1. Super cheap! I bought her a Dick and Jane book just because I thought it was funny.

Saturday Jeff and I took Violet and Jagger to the Wiener Dog Races in Buda. Always a good time and we fill up on festival food.

Every Tuesday Violet and I meet up with Amy and Lucy at Alamo Draft House for baby day at the movies. The mom's love it and the babies don't seem to mind either.

We also try to get outside every day for a walk or a run. Violet likes to be in her jog stroller and feel the wind in her hair. She usually spends the first half of the run awake looking around, and the second half sound asleep. It's good for both of us.

Since I'm planning to return to work in a month the search has been on for childcare. We looked at at daycare, but I just couldn't imagine leaving my little girl at a place where she would get little one-on-one attention, so we decided a nanny would be a better option at least for the first year. We found a woman we really like and she will be spending Thursday afternoon and Friday with me on a trial basis. If this goes well, we'll make her an offer and have her start at the end of the month when I go back to work. That's enough on that subject, it's not one I like to think about :(

Oh, I hear Violet waking up...gotta go...

  1. we have had really good luck with Dr. Smith diaper ointment (at HEB). It's not cheap but dang it works.

  2. You might also ask the pedi if the diaper rash is a yeast infection. She can give you a Rx for some kick ass ointment that works in just a couple of applications. It's significantly more pricey than anything you'll find OTC, so see if the pedi can give you some samples.
